The drive belt and pulleys are a commonly overlooked system on your SAAB or Volvo that is essential to a properly operating vehicle.  Be sure to check the components in the system every regularly.

Vehicle Fitment:

SAAB 9-5 1999-2004 Chassis 43505871 and below

Additional Part Details:

Check your drive belt every oil change to make sure it does not have any peeling, cracking or deterioration.  SAAB recommends replacement of the accessory belt every 96'000 kilometers.

To check the chassis code, just refer to the last 8 digits of your VIN, if it's equal or below the number above (43505871) then this is the correct belt for your 9-5.  Also do check if you have the upper middle idler pulley.

This is the long version belt for vehicle's with the aforementioned upper middle pulley.  At some point, SAAB removed that pulley and opted for a shorter belt.  SAAB used the long belt with the additional pulley for smoothness, it's thought that it was later removed to reduce the cost of the 9-5.

Belt replacement requires removal of the upper engine bracket to access the belt tensioner.  Before removing this member, you have to support the motor from below using a jack and a block of wood.  The tensioner is relieved using a 1/2 drive.  The belt can then be swapped for the new one.  Ensure that it is in the correct position and that all the grooves line up with the pulleys.
