Engine sensors can easily give you a scare if they malfunction by throwing you a dash light.  Luckily, these sensors are usually located in logical spots and aren't too difficult to take care of.

This crankshaft sensor has built itself quite the reputation within the SAAB community, with it leaving you stranded if it fails.  Being placed below the turbocharger, it does get quite hot, even with its small heatshield.  Luckily, we have you covered with this OE Bosch unit that is identical to the original SAAB part.

As mentioned above, the main symptom that this sensor has failed is that your SAAB won't start when hot, meaning you will have to wait for the car to cool considerably before you can fire it up again.  It typically fails without warning, so replacing it at the 150'000km range is a good idea if you go on a lot of long drives with your SAAB.

Fortunately, replacement of this component does not take long and you do not need a lift.  First make sure your car is not hot before starting.  It can be accessed from top or bottom, from the top you will need to remove the exhaust manifold heatshield and then reach down and undo the small heatshield that is covering the sensor, then remove the torx screw holding the sensor in and remove it.  Make sure the old o-ring comes out with the sensor as well.  Apply a light coat of motor oil or silicone grease to the o-ring and install the new sensor.  Do not forget to install the small heatshield for the crankshaft sensor as this gives the sensor a longer service life, finally reinstall the exhaust manifold heatshield.
